How do you express your love for others? Is it by giving extravagant gifts, declaring your love through social media posts or do you do something more meaningful? It is nice to show our love for our partners, parents, children, teammates, co-workers, teachers and even babysitters. However, you do not need to spend large amounts of money to show someone you love them. It is good to share your love through thoughtful gestures whether it be a hug, a cup of coffee or flowers. As parents, it is equally important to practice self-love and self-care. We all need some me time to reflect and recharge our batteries during our hectic family life.

Teaching our children about self-love and how to express love for others is one of the most important roles as a parent. Every parent wants their child to grow up with self-confidence and a loving nature towards others. Parents are a child’s first role model and so children often mirror them. As such, it is extremely important for parents to teach their children every day to love themselves and others through words and actions. Here are some helpful tips on how to achieve this;

Self Care

As a parent, you can often feel overwhelmed when it comes to family life. Parents can lose their identity as they see themselves as a “parent” first and an individual second. It is not uncommon for parents to suffer from burnout. Parents need to take some time off to care for themselves, it is not only beneficial for them but for their children too. Not everyone has the support of family and friends so it can be difficult to take time off. It is a good idea to hire a babysitter if you are struggling to find childcare. There are many different activities parents can do to help relieve stress and unwind after a hectic day. Here are some of our favorite ideas;

  • Dinner date with friends, family or significant others
  • Go for a walk/run, to release endorphins and relieve stress
  • Reunion with good friends to help recharge your batteries
  • Spa day at home e.g prep a bath with relaxing music

Surround yourself with positive people

The community in which you surround yourself can provide a lot of support and love for you and your family. A strong community can provide many opportunities for growth and experience for example, volunteering. Close-knit communities can help surround parents with people looking out for their best interests and working towards similar goals. Being an active member of a strong community can provide you with the support you need to succeed and it can teach your children about friendship and how to support and love their friends.

Be kind to yourself

If you fail at something or make a parenting mistake it is ok, we are all human. You have two options, you either tear yourself down or lift yourself up. Tell yourself you are going to be OK and remind yourself of all your parenting successes. Everyone experiences self-doubt, Never compare yourself to others, you are on a unique and individual journey with your children and you should only compare yourself with yourself. Remove limiting beliefs about your self-worth or parenting abilities and speak kindly about yourself in your thoughts. This can make a real difference in your mood, and stress levels. Often our harshest critic is our own mind and we must learn to not let those doubting voices win. Our children are very aware and act like sponges, negative beliefs about yourself will be felt by your children and can impact them negatively.

Give to others

Giving to others can be one of the best feelings in the world. It is a great idea to include the whole family, this can teach your kids from a young age about the importance of sharing and giving back to society. It can be as simple as giving grandparents a hug or making a thoughtful card for their babysitter or teacher. Often the most inexpensive gifts are the most precious and help you to connect with others.

Practice self love on valentines

it is important to love ourselves and others every day of the year. It can be as easy as taking a 30-minute walk in the evening or hugging your babysitter and thanking them for taking care of your children. Remember that self-love is so important as a parent, and can help your children grow to be self-confident, fun-loving adults.
